Animal Collective listening party tonight at Electric Fetus
To call Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion a hotly anticipated is to completely forsake the countless blogs and message board debates that bravely gave up their bandwidths for the cause. After much internet sparring and peer-to-peer leakage, the latest release from the Baltimore four-piece is finally ready for its domestic vinyl release, and Electric Fetus is hosting the listening party.
The album, to be released as a vinyl LP tomorrow and on CD on January 20, has been the subject of intense speculation. Their last handful of releases are beyond reproach, and seem to ripen sweetly as the years, and listens, fall away. But after a Christmas leak of Merriweather Post Pavilion, the blogs have been ablaze with exactly the kind of boosters and detractors that will ensure pleasing album sales and a temporarily polarized fan base.
The atmosphere of a listening party is always a confoudning thing. Listening to a new album in the midst of strangers is something like unfamiliar dogs meeting one another in a park. Lots of sidelong glances, an examination of the most minute signs of judgment, the slightest evidence of dissent. Whichever side of the fence you fall in regards to Merriweather Post Pavilion, a stop by the Fetus tomorrow evening should make for an exquisite place to watch all that message board bickering unfold IRL.
7:00 P.M. All ages. Free. Electric Fetus, 2000 4th Avenue South, Minneapolis; 612.870.9300.
