Fuck Knights fumigate the joint.
An opening and a grand opening are two very different things. An opening is little more than the turning of a small placard hung in a shop window-- the impotent flick of a switch, and the humming glow of a neon sign to signal the undertaking of business as usual.
A grand opening, on the other hand, is the stuff of carousels and midways. Breads, circuses, etc, etc. Tonight's show at the 7th Street Entry is exactly the sort of grand opening that 2009 needs. With enough breathing room from those stifling, wind-choked beginnings comes a showcase of local talent that includes everything exalted from our roster of musical wares.
On the undercard is Fuck Knights, who are but a matter of baby steps and boozy nights away from being the most prized contenders in our stable. A three-piece of sinew and muscle, every show is a victory by knockout. Garage rock never saw Fuck Knights coming-- they are a sucker punch of raw sonic perfection and uncommon pageantry.
What can be said about Baby Guts that hasn't been said in their numerous A-list entries, Picked To Click write-ups, and features they've netted over the last 3 years? Sure, Laura Larson's fabled scream gets more and more strident and shuddering by the show. What's been unsaid is that bassist Taylor Motari's scream keeps up step for step with Larson's, and even seems to ravage the whistle range, a piercing hellscape of the vocal register known only to the infinitely bold.
Rounding out the show is Gospel Gossip, who are quickly proving themselves to be fishers of national repute. It's scarcely been a calendar year since the release of their outstanding debut full length Sing Into My Mouth, but the local wunderkinds have already debuted a new single on their Myspace page. It finds Gospel Gossip at their moodiest and most mercurial, and seems a bold refinement of the territory they mapped on Sing.
It's an auditory meal of many courses. Get out there and give your ear what for. It'll never know what hit it, but it'll thank you in the morning.
8:00 P.M. 18+. $6.00. 7th Street Entry, 701 1st Avenue North, Minneapolis; 612.338.8388.
