SPL to rattle bones tonight at Barfly's Loft
![]() |
Perennially overcast, grimy, and gothic, London seems a fitting home for the dubstep movement, a musical shotgun marriage that fuses the stoned atmospherics of dub reggae with the cold digital crunch of drum 'n' bass. The mood is almost universally bass-heavy and dark, though there are bold flashes of unexpected beauty or clanking industrial menace, depending on the artist. And, just like its rave-friendly parents, dubstep has extended its reach beyond England to anywhere there is a concrete sprawl that will welcome such striking, spiky music. Enter Sam Poole, a.k.a. SPL, an emerging American DJ and producer that aims to wrench some of the spotlight away from the British.
The event also marks the first major outing for mplsdub, a collective bent on bringing the best of the dubstep genre to Minneapolis. To round out tonight's roster, they've included two stages of local talent that will be sure to please any dance fan. So, for the price of one ticket, you get to see familiar faces and new talent giving their all to provide the Twin Cities with both fun and fury.
