Surprise: Atmosphere takes the prize (again)

Categories: Local Music

Star Tribune's Chris Reimenschneider published his annual Twin Cities Critics Tally in today's paper, making it the fourth consecutive year that a Rhymesayers act was voted most popular by area writers and DJs. (Brother Ali won last year, P.O.S. took the cake in 2006 and Atmosphere won the first time around in 2005.) Though When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold wasn't in my personal top 10, I still think it's a great album and it has proven its staying power on both the local level and in the national arena.

Here are the top albums, as chosen by local critics in this year's tally:
1. Atmosphere, "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That [Expletive] Gold"

2. Jeremy Messersmith, "The Silver City"

3. Haley Bonar, "Big Star"

4. Solid Gold, "Bodies of Water"

5. Vampire Hands, "Me and You Cherry Red"

11. Dillinger Four, "CIVIL WAR"

12. (tie) Mike Mictlan & Lazerbeak, "Hand Over Fist"

Tapes 'N Tapes, "Walk It Off"

14. City on the Make, "$1,000,000"

15. (tie) Chris Koza, "The Dark, Delirious Morning"
