Misanthropology: Dave Mustaine

Categories: Music

He's the frowny guy on the far right-- Dave Mustaine in Megdeath.

Okay, all right. Mustaine's boot from Metallica in 1983 does go down as one of the most famously unceremonious firings in the history of rock and roll. To be driven from L.A. to New York on the pretense of recording a new album, only to find your replacement at the station with flying V in hand and all your gear tidily stowed on a Greyhound bound back to California? Ice cold.

But the remainder of Mustaine's career has simply been a painfully long exercise in wrath and bitter revenge that would put Medea to shame. And with his eternal squabbling with collaborators and competitors, Mustaine has murdered plenty of his own children out of sheer scorn (figuratively speaking, natch).

Click below the jump, good readers, and spare us not your outraged fumings. Gimme Noise, without a shred of trepidation, presents 4 solid reasons to roll your eyes at Dave Mustaine.

New Daughters of the Sun song released

Daughters of the Sun, as photographed by waltzcore.

The word "shamanistic" is a descriptor fraught with peril. It can invoke images of the ridiculously psychadelic or the unfathomably ethereal.

But don't let modern perversions of the term distract you from Daughters of the Sun. This long-standing and ingloriously ink-starved local band has been turning out experiments wild enough to twist the ear and familiar enough to tap the toe, and in anticipation of their new album Ring, which releases on April 25th at the Hexagon Bar, an excerpt from their new song "The Long Way" has quietly surfaced on their Myspace page.

Google launches massive music giveaway in China

Categories: Music

The hour of reckoning is well at hand for music labels and the Internet providers that, by complicity with rampant music piracy, usher their coffins into the Earth. And in a massive initiative aimed at curbing piracy in China, which numbers a staggering 300 million Internet users, Google has climbed into bed with numerous labels, major and indie, to beat pirates to the punch with a deluge of free music.

Clutter Control: Fever Ray's self-titled

Fever Ray's self-titled album called to me from the break-room free table. I'll admit, my choice was based entirely on the great cover art. Swedish artist Martin Ander skillfully aped the style of Charles Burns' Black Hole; in fact, the atmospheric, haunting album would make an excellent soundtrack to for the book.

Varsity Theater, March 30
by Jake Mohan

"It's great to be here. This is a great room," Bob Mould told a packed Varsity Theater, already several songs into his nearly 90-minute set. "Have I been here before?" he asked the crowd, feigning middle-aged absent-mindedness. "How long has this place been here? I don't live here anymore. You have to help me."

MinniHaha: Ralphie May is still standing

MayPic.jpg

Ah, Spring, 2003. That pristine time was the comedy equivalent of September 10 -- nobody anticipated the horrors to come. But shortly thereafter the ground shook, the heavens rumbled, and NBC's Last Comic Standing was birthed like a screaming turd-baby from the puckered asshole of American culture. At long last, standup had a mediocrity competition to rival the various dubious musical-themed reality TV shows.

Kill the Vultures release new album (MP3 download)

Categories: Local Music
KTV-cover.jpg
Kill the Vultures MC Crescent Moon was kind enough to send over a preview of their forthcoming album, Ecce Beast, which will be released next Friday, April 10 at the Triple Rock. Judging from the new track, Ecce Beast will feature more of the eclectic, jazzy hip-hop vignettes that made last year's EP, Midnight Pine, so intriguing. And if I'm reading the credit correctly, the dark cover art for the new album was designed by local artist and musician Michael Gaughan. Click on the link below to download "14th St. Ritual" off the new album.
