Sage Francis tonight at First Avenue
Here at Gimme Noise, we love these kinds of curious lineups, and as our music community becomes more and more delightfully schizophrenic, they're thankfully becoming more common.
Face it-- none of the bands on tonight First Avenue bill have much business sharing the same stage on the same night. A doo wop band, a hardcore band, and a couple rappers? A decade ago, this is the kind of bill that would make a booking agent break into a cold sweat.
Welcome to 21st century Minneapolis. Sage Francis headlines tonight's show, and will no doubt pack the house with indie rap lovers, anxious to hear the Providence, RI hip-hopper deliver live.
Building Better Bombs, of course, features local rap phenom P.O.S. operating with a six string and an overdrive pedal, and without his hip hop nom de plume, and Cecil Otter, his brother in arms in the Doomtree collective, will be pulling double duty (he heads an early all ages show tonight at the Entry). Opening the show is The God Damn Doo Wop Band, who should be known to Gimme Noise readers-- they've been picked to click and written up in our vaunted columns more times than Norm Coleman.
It's just the sort of bill that should make everyone thankful they live in Minneapolis, a town where hardcore bands and doo woppers shake hands and hoist beers and generate enough national prestige to attract a name like Sage Francis. Do not adjust your T.V. set-- this is the way it's supposed to sound.
