Bring tha noize-- Shellac.

After two decades of producing sonically daring recordings of bands like Nirvana, P.J. Harvey and Wedding Present, it's easy to overlook the fact that Steve Albini was performing his own breed of strident noise rock all the while.

It's been a stretch since Shellac has played the Twin Cities, but the announcement was made yesterday that the storied indie three-piece, which also includes fellow producer and engineer Bob Weston, that they would be playing the Varsity on June 25th, with just a $12.00 price ticket.

Shellac at their most agreeable.

Take Albini out of the picture, and you've got dutiful bass and drums that are quick with the pound and the down stroke and don't take too many risks. It's Albini's wincing guitar work, soaked in treble and not too painstakingly tuned, that give Shellac that signature sound that makes first time listeners cringe in appreciation.

In any case, the Varsity Theater, with its opium den furnishings and overstuffed sofa arrangements, should be a remarkably plush and ornate environment in which to see a noisy bunch of slacker millionaires work their magic. But hey-- at the very least, it's a sound that will drive the white hats right out the front door and into the Big Ten for dollar pitchers, and that's always welcome.

June 25, 7:00 P.M. 18+. 7:00 P.M. $12.00. Varsity Theater, 1308 4th Street SE, Minneapolis; 612.604.0222.
