Spider Baby screening tonight at the Turf Club

More than perhaps any other generation, the generation likely to be represented at tonight's screening of the 1968 disasterpiece Spider Baby (or Liver Eaters, or Attack of the Liver Eaters, or Cannibal Orgy, or The Maddest Story Ever Told) is a generation of astute and scholarly crap archivists. At no other time has Plan 9 From Outer Space, the oiginal Battlestar Galactica, and Brady Bunch reruns been subject to so much fond scrutiny.

We can't take all the credit-- it was, after all, the preceding generations that left Bing Crosby, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, and pet rocks as their cultural monuments. We in the 21st century are simply standing on the shoulders of giants.

In any case, leave it to this current brood of beachcombers to exhume Spider Baby from its place of rest. What probably escaped attention in its own day is seeing second life, for better or for worse, at the Turf Club of all places, where the film will be screened in the main stage area.

It's a great excuse to get out of the house on a rainy spring Monday. And with a veritable dearth of things to distract you from your impending deadlines (ahem), you really have no choice. The above clip should give you a basic example of what to expect from the rest of the film. Burn edits, some campy acting and no shortage of racial stereotyping. Throw in a few Turf Club pints and you've got yourself a made night.

21+. 10:30 P.M. Free. Turf Club, 1601 University Avenue, Saint Paul.
