MinniHaHa: The Monday Night Comedy Series

MNCS.jpg
Without a doubt, the strangest and most unpredictable weekly comedy show in the Twin Cities is the Monday Night Comedy Series at the Beat Coffeehouse. Not only does the MNCS feature the best improv and standup comics from the local scene -- as well as a smattering of spoken word artists and poets performing lighter fare -- but on a given night you might see, say, someone painted blue and clad in full Smurf regalia doing a Gargamel-themed set, or a Cool Whip eating contest. And every show opens with a reading from the novelization of Robocop II.

Host Andrew "Danger" Brynildson is part emcee, part ringmaster. He's prone to challenging audience members to showdowns and, when he loses a bet, always pays up: usually with spare change, junk food, and the occasional vial of his own hair. Brynildson will be moving early this summer, so there are only 10 installments of the long-running series left.

And what better time to catch the MNCS -- this week's lineup includes the dryly hilarious Linda Aarons, the Minneapolis Comedy Death Squad's Wayne Burfeind, the great Gus Lynch, double-threat Zach Coulter, 2008 Funniest Person in the Twin Cities winner Rick Logan, and Acme regulars Tommy Ryman, Tom Steffen, and James Moore.

The Monday Night Comedy Series, 8 p.m. Mondays (obviously) at the Beat Coffeehouse, 1414 W. 28th St., Minneapolis. All ages, $3.
