You might think Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a mockumentary in the vein of This is Spinal Tap. It is not. Anvil! tells the true tale of a Canadian metal band whose 1982 release of Metal on Metal went on to influence mega-acts like Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer. Over 20 years later, bandmates Steve Kudlow and Robb Reiner still dream of breaking into the mainstream, despite living relatively normal lives with wives, children, and construction/catering jobs. Anvil! The Story of Anvil tells the true tale of their last-ditch effort to make it big.

Director Sacha Gervasi filmed the documentary several years back, serving as a roadie on their tour of Canadian hockey arenas, then on to a European tour, which had disastrous results. Misadventures on the tour ranged from the band getting lost in Czechoslovakia, playing to an audience of one, and fighting with a bookie who tried to pay the band in goulash.

While there are moments of hilarity (the stunned film crew would periodically ask Gervasi if subjects were actually paid actors), there are also many moments of tears and heartbreaking reality.

A hit at the Sundance Film Festival, Anvil! The Story of Anvil begins screening here in Minneapolis tonight at the Uptown Theatre (2906 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis; 612.825.6006). For a complete list of show times, check out the link here.
