Jimmy2Times' Michael Jackson tribute mix! (MP3)

Fans of Michael Jackson all have their own way of mourning the King Of Pop. Perhaps you became a dancin' machine at the club last weekend when they played some of his tunes in remembrance. Maybe (like a certain sister of mine) you've played his music nonstop since his death, as if a second of silence means we'd forget.

It has got to be a special thing, though, when you're the one behind the turntables giving grieving fans a piece of what you treasured about this man, while simultaneously paying your own homage with his music.  Jimmy 2 Times had such an outlet last Saturday on RSE Radio.

"This mix features my own personal favorites by the best to ever do it, Michael Jackson," Jimmy said.

Nas and Damian Marley to fuse reggae and rap at First Ave

Categories: Concert Preview

OK, so hip-hop supertour Rock The Bells won't be making a 2009 stop in Minneapolis.  Considering that the Soundset festival already brought a number of rap heavies this year, the absence may not be much to fuss over...but, if you're really disappointed, you could always make the trip to Denver (the show in Chicago was on Saturday).  Still, for those that won't be able to come up with the cash or the time to head out of town, some of the tour's brightest stars will be stopping in Minneapolis.

Case in point: Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley are slated to share the headlining spot on the Bells lineup, and will be performing at First Ave tonight.  After Nas guested on Marley's "Road to Zion", the duo decided to collaborate on a full length album (entitled Distant Relatives) which was initially scheduled for release in June.  It's since been pushed back, with no firm date set--but that just means Minneapolis will get a live preview of the material before the album drops.

CD Review: Wilco, "Wilco (The Album)"

Categories: CD Review

I love going out to eat, especially at a restaurant that's a little pricier; one that has so many good choices that to choose is agonizing.  Your plate arrives and the excitement causes you to perhaps eat it too quickly, requiring you to take home the remnants, hoping to savor them again the next day. After refrigeration, the congealing of juices and a necessary reheating, your favorite plate of food becomes mediocre, requiring some extra salt and pepper, only a shadow of what it once was.

To equate Wilco's new album, literally entitled Wilco (The Album), to the same fate as a reheated plate of food might be a bit harsh. Yet today it appears that Wilco has become a band that's content with recollecting. One that has been there and now feel that it's ok to put out an album that's a little less inspired.

It's been a couple weeks, dear readers. But our radio silence is most assuredly not for a lack of thngs making us pinch the bridges of our noses in an attempt to escape homicide charges. Hey. Sometimes even the most spiteful of us get busy with Mario Kart tournaments and mandatory grieving procedures for the fallen King of Pop.

Click on. Sit beside us. Join hands. If it was good enough for Freud, it's good enough for you.

After a one-year hiatus, the fourth installment of B-Girl Be: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop will return to Intermedia Arts in August. Last year, art gallery/performance space Intermedia Arts went through a rough patch as the board of directors was forced to scale back its staff and hours of operation, and this year's B-Girl Be events will be part of a rebirth of the beloved epicenter for local art.

As with previous B-Girl Be festivities, the summit will include several different events, beginning with a four-day summer youth workshop in August and culminating with a festival on September 19. For more information, visit the Intermedia Arts website. Here's a rundown of all of the different B-Girl Be gatherings, performances, and exhibits:

It was a weekend of free expression, equality and lots and lots (and lots) of rainbows. Pride parades took over the streets in many major cities this weekend, spilling into nightclubs and parks, too. Minneapolis is reputed to have one of the best Pride weekends in the nation, something you can definitely see in our slideshow below.
