Drum & Bass dead? Not in the Twin Cities

tcdnb.jpg

OK, it's not dead in the UK, either, where the stuff is mainstream as pop music. But it seems any electronic music fan you'd ask in the States would be the first to pronounce the death of drum & bass/jungle like he was written into its will.

Here in Minneapolis, however, the DJs and producers who consider themselves soldiers of the genre that mashes ragga, hip-hop and megabasslines are many. And they've compiled Volume 3 of the CD series started in the early '00s, Twin Cities Drum & Bass, celebrating its release tonight.

Ghostbusters 25th anniversary screening this Saturday

ghostbusters 500.jpg

It's hard for me to believe that Ghostbusters is 25 years old. I remember the first time I watched the flick. It was at my friend Julie Carver's 7th birthday party. For us kids the movie was both terrifying and hilarious. And it was a big deal that we were watching it at her home because VHS was still a pretty new phenomenon in my suburban world.

OK, maybe I do believe Ghostbusters is that old.

Dwight York goes to Sturgis

Categories: Comedy

York.jpg

There are only a few hard and fast rules in standup comedy. Never tell a joke you didn't write. Never tell jokes standing on the same level as the audience. Don't do comedy outside. Don't do comedy in broad daylight.

Twin Cities favorite Dwight York is going to break those last two rules this week when he becomes one of the few comedians to grace the stage at Sturgis, the motorcycle mega-rally in South Dakota. York will be performing multiple sets every day throughout the next week, including two appearances on the main stage and one during the notorious Miss Buffalo Chip pageant (you know, the one John McCain generously offered to enter his wife Cindy into last year).

5 Questions: Backstage with Jeremy Dawson of Shiny Toy Guns

Categories: 5 Questions

Alcohol is a hell of a drug.  Last night, Twin Cities party people turned up in droves to the Fine Line for Amstel Light's Amsterdam Live showcase, thirsty for the gallons of free beer and an impressive lineup of music, including DJ Steve Aoki and LA electro-rock outfit Shiny Toy Guns. The Guns aren't Minneapolis virgins--they've been here often, either in support of other bands or as headliners themselves. Combine a solid Minneapolis fan base with a boatload of free brew, and the result gets a little rowdy, even on a school night (if you were there, you might even be reading this from the comfort of your couch after you called in sick). Amidst all the chaos, Gimme Noise had a chance to catch up with Shiny Toy Guns' bassist and keyboard wizard, Jeremy Dawson, who talked to us about tour essentials, killer albums, and dressing up like King Arthur.

Folks from the Twin Cities who are into vintage fashion love the thrill of the hunt. To find the perfect piece you could drive around for hours hitting up the many thrift stores, boutiques and antique malls around town. Or you could save some time and gas money by making a one-shop-stop into Blacklist Vintage on Nicollet and 27th St. in Minneapolis.
