Dead Weather tonight in the Main Room

The fidelity of Jack White's new side project has made a quantum leap, and it's doubtful that the die hard analogophile is still splicing tape with razors on Dead Weather's debut Horehound.

Sure, White is the household name of the band. They call it "Jack White's side project." But in fact, the new work is covered in Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart's fingerprints. Its a big, full sound they're playing with here, riddled with classic rock tropes. And tonight, the newfangled four-piece will be at the main room.

Dead Weather's "Treat Me Like Your Mother."

It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Mosshart brings an arena's breadth to Dead Weather's music. But there's virtually none of Jack White's signature on this work, save his "reaching-one-note-too-high" whine in his vocal performances. In the end, the whole thing sounds like the Kills--big, boomy, snarly, bratty. Not a soft touch in this mix.

And to be honest, we like it. In the video above, it's nice to see our rock stars exhibiting a bit of attitude, a touch of playful menace. Dead Weather sounds fun, and feels tough, even if, in passing moments, they do come perilously close to dreaded big rock acts like Audioslave in the screaming jags that spring up between the guitars and the drums.

Their success as Dead Weather might owe a bit to nepotism--White and Mosshart are surrugate sons and daughters of the indie media. The fact that their fame already commands a $30.00 cover charge might rankle the more frugal among us, particularly since they haven't done much in the way of proving themselves--remember, we're only a couple weeks out from Horehound's release.

But, when you're Jack White and Alison Mosshart, you get those kinds of perks. One of the benefits of being the 500 pound gorillas, as we all know, is that you get to sit wherever the hell you want.

18+. 7:00 P.M. $30.00. With Screaming Females. First Avenue Main Room, 701 First Avenue North, Minneapolis; 612.388.8388.
