Free Energy tonight at Triple Rock
All right, okay-- we were rather hard on Free Energy last time we told you about them. We were full of vinegar and stress. We hadn't showered in days, and our own smell was beginning to offend us.
Granted, not a lot about our circumstances has changed. It's one in the afternoon and we're quietly stirring whiskey into our coffee to get through the day. But we want to make it fully clear that, when it comes to Free Energy and their new ultra-slick glam sound, we are more than prepared to eat our bitter words of past days.
The ex-Hockey Night members, now backed by the excruciatingly hip DFA Records, are embarking on a sparse scattering of summer shows, and kudos to them for picking their former hometown as one of the stops. It's a long way from Phillie, and a bit of a pain in the ass to get here, particularly when one acknowledges, as one must, the fact that there are more than a few in town who remember the, oh, let's call it "ancient nastiness."
But they've found themselves on an outstanding bill, featuring Picked to Click-ers His Mischief, dance DJ extraordinaire Soviet Panda, and wunderkind of Pets and Melodious Owl fame, now operating under the name S. Funckee.
It's a great Thursday line-up, and douchebag factor should be excedingly low at the black box on the West Bank, as the Beyonce show should be keeping all bachelorette pub crawls to a scant minimum. Well, for a while anyway.
To boot, it's an affordable show, particularly for a touring band on a reputable label. With a line-up like this, we defy you to have more fun for $8.00 anywhere in town tonight.
18+. 9:00 P.M. $8.00. Triple Rock Social Club, 629 Cedar Avenue, Minneapolis; 612.333.7399.
