Yo La Tengo headed to First Avenue this October
It's only a matter of time before Yo La Tengo get their pictures in the OED.
For a couple decades, a dozen albums, and a few thousand fans, Yo La Tengo has made their quixotic name more synonymous with their musical genre than almost any band to come before. Jazz has Coltrane and Davis, punk has Lydon and Pop, and indie rock has Kaplan and Hubley.
And now hear this--the fabled genre-sprawling veterans are hitting up the First Avenue Main Room this October.
Yo La Tengo's "Sugarcube."
It's another in a string of heavy-hitting shows of veteran revolutionaries to grace the Main Room this year. With Sonic Youth making this summer memorable for generations of noise fans old and young alike, Yo La Tengo at First Avenue will likely define the autumn for a city of music fans, albeit in more hushed, whispered tones.
Yo La Tengo is one of those bands with a long enough career, a broad enough recording past, and a restless enough creative process that defining their sound in print is a dreadful affair. Damn these words--such brittle things, they.
No, Yo La Tengo is a band best described by the mood they exude, a mood which has remained constant through their two decades of protean shape shifting, of imporvisational jaunts, of rapt, mellowed songcraft. We all know that mood, and it's one that has defined their live presence since their formation in 1984--an obssession with things ethereal and twinkling. They are, if any band ever was, a sonic velvet hammer--weighty themes delivered with almost unbearable lightness.
Check their tour dates below, and start socking away cash now--come October, you don't want to be left out in those bitter autumnal winds.
