Disney to buy Marvel

Categories: Pop Culture
Odd news, though it shouldn't be surprising with the Marvel name become such a hot commodity with their success in the film world of late-- looks like the happiest place on Earth is maneuvering to earn its eyeglass tape and pocket protector buy purchasing Marvel Entertainment, the comic and film company responsible for Spidey, Namor, and Marvel Man.

It can only mean one inevitable thing-- Mickey Mouse versus Silver Surfer.

In Defence kicks off Europe tour tonight at Memory Lanes

Not pictured-- Ben Crew, tacos.

In a recent interview in Razorcake, Ben Crew, vocalist and motivator for In Defence, stated that a silent war was underway in America-- not a war of race or ideology, but rather a war between pizza lovers and taco lovers. This is Crew's war.

In Defence is a true local gem, even if their name doesn't get the mentions it deserves outside the local punk circuit. In Defence isn't just a great band-- they are a band of such incomprable wit, humor, and blunt force goodwill that any fan of local music should mortify themselves for missing out.

Zombie Pub Crawl is still a couple months away, but that didn't stop a bunch of undead ladies from infiltrating Too Much Love last weekend and taking over our photo booth. Since it wasn't Halloween, we are forced to assume that these girls were actually just zombies looking for a fun time. Click here for all of Denis Jeong Plaster's photos from Too Much Love.

Dark Dark Dark announced today that they will be joining Why? on tour starting at the end of September, undoubtedly a huge opportunity for the local baroque-influenced folk group. Why? have been getting heaps of press lately in anticipation of their newest release, Eskimo Snow, which is due out September 22, and scoring the opening spot on the Why? tour should help to shine a spotlight on Dark Dark Dark, who are continuing to assert themselves on a national level.

In conjunction with their newest tour, Dark Dark Dark will be releasing a 7" that features remixes of their songs by a couple of notable artists: an Odd Nosdam treatment of "Junk Bones" (available for download below), and Dosh's remix of "All the Things." The 7" will also come with a download for a third remix, "Colors," by Tom Inhaler.

Friday Night at the Movies

Thinking about catching a flick this weekend? Here's what to see...

OPENING

INTO TEMPTATION: Minneapolis and the Stone Arch Bridge play supporting roles in this locally made film, starring Jeremy Sisto and Kristin Chenoweth. When a cool Catholic priest hears a confession from a call girl who says she is planning to kill herself soon, he launches a personal quest through Minneapolis's sexual underworld to find her. (Lagoon Cinema)
City Pages: "Modest but engaging. ... Considering that a woman's life is in imminent danger, the film unfolds with a remarkable lack of urgency, but Sisto's laid-back charisma sees the movie through to its resolutely non-Hollywood finish."
Star Tribune: 3 stars Pioneer Press: 2.5 stars

Motorhead tonight at First Avenue

Categories: Just Announced

We struggle to find a band that got more action out of fewer chords. The Ramones are dead, Iggy's making jazz, and AC/DC sold out.

Motorhead on the other hand? Their songs are 3 chords and a fistful of amphetamine. And God help us, it works.
