Motorhead tonight at First Avenue

We struggle to find a band that got more action out of fewer chords. The Ramones are dead, Iggy's making jazz, and AC/DC sold out.

Motorhead on the other hand? Their songs are 3 chords and a fistful of amphetamine. And God help us, it works.

It works for Lemmy too, the fabled bassist for the hard rock outfit, currently kicking ass in its fourth decade of activity. I mean, look at the guy. He looks as much like a truck driver as a rock star, and his wart is the most famous facial blemish since Mark Hamil pulled a human torpedo through a windshield before filming Empire Strikes Back.

Motorhead moves too fast to be preoccupied with such trifles as, you know, changing their approach. When you've been active and profitable for 30-some years, a change of formula is paramount to hubris, and Motorhead is flesh and blood proof of that one great maxim-- "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

No mention of Motorhead would be complete without giving a nod to Lemmy's well publicized sexual escapades. By his own estimation, he's a member of the ultra exclusive 1000+ club, with numbers ranging from 1,200 groupies bedded to close to 3,000. In any case, we always doff our cap to the unsightly and infirm among us who manage to get more action than an entire town of indie scenesters.

18+. 8:00 P.M. $32.50 advance/ $35.00 door. With Reverend Horton Heat and Throwrag. First Avenue Main Room, 701 First Avenue North, Minneapolis; 612.823.0750.
