My, how we love our block parties. Saturday's all-day
Pizza Luce Block Party featured all the typical signs you were at yet another--scores of folks who prefer their music outdoors and terminating by 10 P.M. sharp standing in lines for wristbands followed by lines for concession tickets followed by lines for pizza, brats and beer followed by lines for porta potties (all blessedly short throughout the day).
But the thing that set this block party apart from the rest we've
attended this uncharacteristically mild summer? The oppressive
humidity. The humidity that turned my hair Bride of Frankenstein. The
humidity that nearly had me tossing four dollar (two ticket) cups of
Summit down the front of my shirt.
Luckily this block party also
featured a dunk tank, where for a few bucks you could dunk a
Minnesota RollerGirl or,
if you'd rather, a friend. I considered soliciting friends or foes to
dunk me as soon as I walked in until I promptly witnessed what happens
when you get dunked in a dress--onlookers, many of them children, get
to see you in your skivvies, skirt over head. Perhaps a slightly more
family-friendly replacement for the burlesque performers featured at
Luce Block Parties past?

In any case, I chose to instead sweat it out, imagining I was in a
big ol' sweat lodge with hundreds of Twin Citians, a dozen above-ground
toilets and lots of local musicians (musicians are clean, right?).
Early-day performers offered a chance to see some newer, up-and-coming
acts including Jack Brass Band, Spacewolf, the Alrights, the Framed and the Radio Killers. Once the heat started to break around 5, the stage
turned over to some better-known local acts including Fuck Knights,
Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, Me and My Arrow, MC/VL, Kid Dakota, and
Maria Isa.
Haven't yet had your fill of porta potties and plastic cups?
Red Stag Block Party is Saturday 8/22 featuring Mark Mallman, Chooglin', Heiruspecs, Romantica, Black Blondie,
E.L.nO. and Roma di Luna.
