Radio K taking over the FM dial

Starting tomorrow, one of the oldest radio stations in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota's Radio K, will begin broadcasting round-the-clock on the FM dial at 104.5 and 100.7. It's a big leap for the college radio station, who has gradually grown over the years from a daytime AM station to one that would move to the FM dial after the sun went down to allow continuous broadcasting.

"This is a huge milestone for us because we've always been a daytime-only AM station and have been waiting to get a full-time FM signal since Radio K formed," says programmer Amy Daml.

Click here for an extensive history of the station, including its inception in 1912 as a professor's experiment and a 1988 fire that took the station off the air.

Grizzly Bear at the Main Room tonight

Categories: Just Announced
grizzlybear500.jpg

Every so often, a band seems to undergo spontaneous musical combustion, that rarest and most dazzling of all sonic phenomena. It happened with Phoenix. Overnight, the French outfit became the hottest ticket in the country.

And by God, it seems to be happening with Grizzly Bear, who are performing tonight in the Main Room. The First Avenue website says tickets are still available at $20 a pop, but this thing is going to be a big sardine can full of beer and beautiful music.

Point of Departure: Begin with the drums

PointOfDeparture_logo.gif
There are almost as many points of entry for getting into jazz as there are jazz albums--who knows what's going to resonate with you, make you go deeper into the music? From time to time I'll be posting columns that make a couple informal recommendations for jazz albums that might connect with people who have already have a certain bent when it comes to music. This week, if you're a fan of John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, and all things heavy and percussion-laden, I've got some things you might want to check out.

Seeing Dave King last week with Buffalo Collision reminded me of how I really got into jazz in the first place. The first two jazz albums I bought were a Charlie Parker Verve best-of collection and a bootleg of a John Coltrane concert from the mid-sixties when he was somewhere between the more traditional material on his Atlantic albums and the out-there, energy music explorations of his Impulse years. It was the summer before I headed off to college, and jazz seemed like a good thing to start getting into when one went off to college. And I liked what I heard well enough, but I didn't really get into it, didn't feel it (as Radiohead said) in my bones, until I heard two things: Art Blakey's drumming on A Night in Tunisia (which I've already covered extensively here) and the drumming of one of my classmates, Guillermo Brown.

And the rich get richer.

His voluminous and critically peerless work with Radiohead isn't enough to sate the reclusive, eccentric Thom Yorke. He's been hard at work on heavily digitized solo material, and today the news broke that a veritable superband is being assembled under him to perform the stuff live.

As it stands now, the roster includes longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck drummer Jerry Waronker, percussionist Maro refosco, and--TA DA--Red Hot Chili Peppers' bass virtuoso Flea.

There should be a ribbon given to anyone who is able to successfully attend every MN Fashion event and live to tell about it. With more than twenty-five fashion events jammed into one week, it's enough to make the pros dizzy. There were some flops, some gasps and some cringes, but for the most part, Minn. fashion designers delivered the goods. For those of you who have vivid but cloudy memories of the pieces that made you swoon, here is an attempt to help spark that memory with some of the week's highlights. More >>
