An Horse tonight at the 7th Street Entry

Sometimes, all your ears need to get through the day are three minor chords, some booming drums, and a decent voice glazing everything.

Sounding something like Interpol with twice the tempo and half the apathy, Australia's An Horse has made the 7th Street Entry a semi permanent waypoint on their heavy American touring. Not bad, considering the distance between here and there-- but music this slick always travels fast and light.

Pop rock is always best served with cream and sugar. But An Horse has a distinct moodiness to their sound that once inhabited the genre, and now seems relegated only to the shadows, forced into the periphery by less nuanced tropes. While other pop rock can slip into one ear and out the other, taking nothing and leaving nothing, An Horse seems to stick to the brain.

While their recorded material is a combustible solution of amped guitars and echoing drumming, their videos and much of their live performance is much more sonically nude, often involving just tambourine and a tinny acoustic, with Kate Cooper's vocals sounding more tremulous and frail than anything they've set to wax.

With just enough sincerity in every errant note to carry everything, An Horse is an unusually heartfelt entry into a pop landscape most often overcrowded by forgettable entries.
