This week we've got fall festivals with lots of food and music, a freaky film fest, and a reading at a bar. Check it out.

FRIDAY:

Scary Shorts Film Fest
(Rogue Buddha Gallery, 357 13th Ave. NE, Minneapolis; 612.331.3889)

These shorts are guaranteed to be scary. Or, hopefully at least some of them will be. If one doesn't make you bite your nails perhaps the following one will. There's also going to be a magician. Come in costume. 8 p.m.

The Evening Rig, Written Off, Box Thieves, Truckstops Across America

(Hexagon Bar, 2600 27th Ave. S., Minneapolis; 612.722.3454)

Four bands for the price of none! Most of these groups fall under the rock label, some are flavored with a dash of punk, while others have been stewing in minimalism. It will be a tasty buffet for your ear. 9 p.m.

SATURDAY:

Cheese and Apple Festival
(Midtown Global Market, 920 E. Lake St., Minneapolis; 612.872.4041)

Sample a variety of apples and cheese, take home recipes, watch the cheese and apple bake-off judged by local celebrities, and learn while enjoying cooking demonstrations. There will also be live readings, kids' activities, and screenings of FRESH. 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Fall Harvest Festival
(Stevens Square Park, 1801 Stevens Ave., Minneapolis, 612.879.0200)

Check out this afternoon featuring games; contests; children's activities; interactive art by William Hessian; live music by the Johnson Twins, Davis & Granowski, and Bethany Larson; chili cook-off; hot pepper eating contest; and more. Noon to 3 p.m.

Peace, Power, and Unity
(Sabathani Community Center, 310 E 38th St., Minneapolis; 612.827.5981)

Participate in workshops and talks, enjoy food, live music, entertainment, and give your two cents to elected officials. Register online at www.everyfamilymatters.org or call 612.728.2084. 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

SUNDAY:

Riot Act Reading Series
(Turf Club, 1601 University Ave. W., St. Paul; 651.647.0486)

It's a reading in a bar. How cool is that? Pretty cool indeed. Punk poet Paul D. Dickinson and Laura Brandenburg play host while local poet Ruth Kohtz and musician Ryan Pfeiffer read from their recent work. 18+. 7 p.m.
