Christmas weekend concert guide

We're in the thick of the holiday season now, which means one thing: back-to-back four-day weekends! Oh, right, and you get to see family, love your fellow man, and some other such nonsense. Honestly, though, just because it's Christmas doesn't mean you can't find plenty of sweet shows around the area; after all, you're bound to need a break from those lovely relatives sooner or later. Accordingly, Gimme Noise has a bounty of local listings beginning tonight to help keep you plenty merry over the long weekend.

Wednesday, December 23

Roma di Luna Holiday Special at the Cedar
Start off the holiday weekend early with husband-and-wife Channy and Alexei Moon Casselle and their band Roma di Luna, whose set should no doubt feature of slew of contemporary and classic holiday favorites judging by their new Christmas EP.  With fellow roots performer Eliza Blue, this should be a shoe-in pre-Christmas Eve stocking stuffer. All ages. $10/$12 at the door.  7 p.m.

Trailer Trash's Trashy Little Xmas Show at Lee's Liquor Lounge
Now in its 16th installment, this annual honky-tonk extravanganza should be every bit as raunchy and entertaining as ever.  Having released a new collection this past year, Plays Smash Hits, expect nothing less than the A-game from these local veterans, who know a thing or two about proper holiday send-ups. 21+. $12. 9 p.m.

Transmission at Clubhouse Jager
For tonight's edition of the weekly Britpop dance party, DJ Jake Rudh is pulling out the late '70s and early '80s regalia for his annual "New Wave Holiday Transmission."  Don't be surprised if you find yourself going wild to Silicon Teens or Gary Numan on this one, folks.  21+. Free. 9 p.m.

Thursday, December 24

DJ Verb X
The Bungalow at the VIP Room
Chances are it's going to be a cold one tonight, so what better way to beat the heat than to hit up some sweltering hip hop and reggaeton party grooves?  DJ Verb X and DJ Nex do this routine every Thursday, meaning there's no reason to worry about night-before-Christmas stage fright.  21+.  $3 before 11 p.m., $6 after 11 p.m.

Canyon Cowboys at Povlitkzi's on 65
Yee-haw, cowboys and cowgirls!  If it's the country you're looking for on Christmas Eve, then you need look no further than Fridley.  These guys will be here on Wednesday as well, but tonight they'll be on from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Christmas morning, which sounds like the big ticket.  21+.

Ritmo Caliente at First Avenue
Assuming you just can't get enough DJ music on this fine night - and there's reason to think can - then hop on over to the Mainroom for something a little spicier: the hot salsa and Latin rhythms of Ritmo and DJ Christian Velasco at the same great deal as the VIP Room.  21+.  $3 before 11 p.m., $6 after 11 p.m.
