Rifftrax live tonight at Block E
For anyone who was wise enough to attend the simulcast of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbitt's devastation of Plan 9 From Outer Space earlier this year, take heed--tonight at various AMC theaters statewide, the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be taking the grimmest and gravest celluloid ever wasted on the Yuletide and turning it into even blacker comedy.
Rifftrax riffs on the Matrix.
Does it seem strange for the Rifftrax gang to be picking Christmas shorts for their feast of embarrassments? It shouldn't, especially to those Misties among you. Some of MST3k's most revered turns were on movies like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and, simply, Santa Claus.
Gimme Noise attended the Plan 9 simulcast, and while the lack of the silhouetted seats caused some disorientation, it was nothing that could eclipse the riffing of Nelson, Murphy, and Corbitt, which seems to have sacrificed much of its obscurity for more rapt observation.
The ultimate meaning of all that mumbo jumbo? It was funny as hell. MST3k is a unifying force--like all cult phenomenon, MST3k fans are bonded to one another by bone-deep love for the show. But unlike all cult phenomena, MST3k was actually good.
Tonight's show costs a sawbuck and starts at 7:00 P.M. By December 17, we've all had enough Bing crooning over the Megamall concourses. Time to laugh at how seedy and homely this holiday can really be. Get your tickets here!
