Now in its eighth year, tomorrow marks the start of the Art Shanties festival. In the months leading up to the event, shanty participants have worked tirelessly to create the structures that will house planned activities, ideas, and, in some cases, themselves over the following weekends. Check out our sneak peak of the shenanigans you can expect should you choose to make the short trek out to Plymouth.

From January 15 through February 7 there will be 20 Art Shanties and 15 mobile performance elements residing on Medicine Lake. Saturday's opening day activities include circuit bending at the I.D.E.A. Shanty, a BIcycle race around the lake, readings from the Riot Act Reading Series, and bluegrass from musician Marc Gartman.

The community will continue to come alive each weekend, with most activities happening between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Returning this year will be the Art Car Taxi Shanty, where guests can tour the lake while enjoying hot chocolate, and the ArtPost Shanty, the only postal office on ice (be sure to send a post card). The body Cartography Projects and folk artist Captain Yonder will also be visiting for music and dance performances.

Other shanties not to be missed include the FantaShanty, a magical shanty (how often do you see those two words together?), where kids can enjoy puppet shows; the Ace Stellar Shany, which is equipped with a Galileo telescope, a planetarium, and information on zodiac signs; and the Black Bania Shanty will warm you up, sauna-style.

And then there's the Dance Shanty, where the party never stops. Check out a clip of last year's dance marathon:

And dICEHOUSES Shanty will also return. Visitors can spend some time playing cards or board games, as you can see here:
