Movies & Music in Loring Park on hiatus for 2010

​We just received an update from the Walker Art Center announcing its summer events, and the release came with this surprising twist: "Due to the density of programming being organized by the Walker, Music & Movies in Loring Park will take a hiatus this summer." For those who live near Loring Park, the Monday night Music & Movies events in the summer have been a longstanding tradition of free neighborhood entertainment, and we're sad to see this event canceled for the coming summer, especially on the heels of awarding it the Best Place for a First Date in this year's Best of the Twin Cities issue.

Rather, the Walker seems to be shifting its focus to holding events on its own grounds, and has announced a series of films and performances that will be taking place on their grassy hillside with a program called Walker's Open Field. See below for the two music highlights coming up this summer.

Soak in the sun and take in the sounds of Tapes 'N Tapes and Total Babe on the Walker's rolling hillside. This day long festival of music throws high school musicians in the mix with established bands, rappers and performers.

In addition to featured acts on the main stage, bring your best music mixes to trade in a mixtape exchange, sign up to perform on the Open Mic stage, and make connections and learn more about the professional arts community at the Young Artists Resource Fair. Presented by the Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC).

The Walker Art Center presents a sumptuous evening concert by singer/songwriter Juana Molina, straight from Buenos Aires, on Saturday, June 26, 8 pm, in the McGuire Theater. Molina blends tropical folk, bubbling electronica, and graceful rhythms to create the freshest sounds coming out of Argentina today. This minimalist chanteuse and former TV comedienne has found an international buzz for her disarming stage presence and beguiling vocals that float through ambient washes of harmonies and textures. The concert is presented in association with the opening day of the exhibition Guillermo Kuitca: Everything, Paintings and Works on Paper, 1980-2008, the first comprehensive survey of the Argentinean artist's career in more than 15 years, featuring some 50 paintings and 25 works on paper from key series focusing on the theater, geography, and domestic and institutional architecture.
