For his first serious lead role, Sacha Baron Cohen, who has made a name for himself playing caricatured roles like Borat, Bruno, and Ali G, will star in an upcoming Queen biopic as lead singer Freddie Mercury.

Based on looks along, Cohen is a natural choice, not to mention his chameleonic ability to transform into new characters as quickly as his mind can create them. As for his singing abilities, however, we don't have much to go on, besides this little ditty by Borat... Unless he's got an ace up his sleeve, we'll keep our fingers crossed that they use Mercury's vocals for the live performance scenes.

The movie has the blessing of the members of Queen, according to Deadline New York, who was the first to report on these developments last night. "This is the first time the surviving members of Queen--Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon--have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band," Deadline reports, "and they formed Queen Films to be part of the production team on the film."

The movie doesn't enter production until early next year, but the studio has already confirmed that a handful of songs have been cleared for use, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," "We Are the Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "You're My Best Friend," and will center around Queen's performance at Live Aid in 1985.

Which means that for now, all we can do is let our imagination take hold and fill in the blanks as Cohen prepares for what could be a huge turning point in his career.
