It won't be the first time Mark Mallman has challenged his own endurance abilities, but it will certainly be his longest running show yet: The local piano man will kick off a performance at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Turf Club that isn't due to wrap up until 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

Dubbed "Marathon 3," Mallman's 78-hour performance will be presented as a single, continuous song, and he is enlisting the help of roughly 100 musicians to rotate behind him as he plays, which should result in more than a few memorable one-off collaborations.

At midnight tomorrow night, for example, Mallman will be backed by Sean Tillman (a.k.a. Har Mar Superstar), Superhopper's Kermit Carter, and Paddy Costello of the Arrivals/Dillinger Four. Saturday's midnight slot will bring acclaimed songwriter Chuck Prophet to St. Paul to collaborate with locals James Buckley and JT Bates, and Prophet will return to the stage early Sunday evening to perform alongside John Munson of the Twilight Hours and Jake Hanson of Halloween, Alaska, as Mallman pulls through the home stretch.

Though some worry that Mallman will be putting himself in physical danger by staying awake and performing for such a long stretch, the ever-fearless performer assures us he'll be just fine. "I'll have someone with me at all times," Mallman says, including the hours between 2:30 a.m. and noon when the Turf is closed to the public. "She's a yoga instructor, she was with me for the last marathon as well."

For those of us who don't share Mallman's stamina, we'll be able to follow along at home with a live webstream, which we will embed right here on Gimme Noise starting at 4 p.m. today. You can also watch it on Mallman's own site.

Gimme Noise -- who is also helping to sponsor the event as a media partner -- will be doing our best to run alongside Mallman as he faces his biggest self-imposed challenge yet, so keep an eye on the blog and our Twitter feed for the play-by-play as the weekend wears on.

And speaking of Twitter, make sure you're following us today for a chance to win a four-day pass to watch the Mallman Marathon 3 live at the Turf Club.

MARK MALLMAN'S MARATHON 3 starts at 4 p.m. this afternoon, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, at the TURF CLUB. 21+. $7/day.
