Tapes 'n Tapes drop new track, announce tour
Offering up the exclusive download of the track to the mega-site is an interesting move, especially in light of the band's history with Pitchfork (who hyped up the band and minted them as one of the first blog-fueled indie rock success stories back in 2006 and then slagged their sophomore album, Walk it Off, in 2008). A peace offering, perhaps?
Either way, we're excited about the new material from the band, who have kept mostly quiet of late while finishing up their record. The new effort was recorded in Minneapolis at the Terrarium and is being released on the band's own Ibid Records, the original home of their debut The Loon before it was picked up by XL -- all of which bodes well for those of us who have been following the band from the beginning.
mp3: Tapes 'n Tapes, "Freak Out"
My first impression is that "Freak Out" decidedly clean. Gone are the scruffy-sounding guitars and vague distortion that marked so much of Tapes 'n Tapes' earlier material. But it's not over-produced either; just pure and immediate.
The songwriting is reminiscent of those early tracks on The Loon, with very bare-bones, chugging guitar riffs propelling the melody and the drums galloping away like an old timey country-western song. In other words, it's familiar, but the production makes it feel incredibly fresh and modern, like they have found just the right balance between the charm of a DIY, lo-fi session and the clarity that's achieved by recording using high quality microphones and studio equipment.
It'll be another couple of months before the full-length is released, but we're guessing the band might offer up another track or two before Outside's street date. In the meantime, here's the track listing:
3. One in the World
5. Desert Plane
7. Freak Out
8. The Saddest of All Keys
9. Hidee Ho
10. People You Know
11. On and On
12. Mighty Long
And you can pencil in Tapes 'n Tapes' hometown album release show now, as they've just announced their upcoming tour. The band will headline the First Avenue Mainroom on Friday, February 25 (18+/$15/8pm). They will also play a warm-up gig on November 11 at the Turf Club.
