The Black Keys announce July 3 date at Roy Wilkins

Grammy-winning rock duo the Black Keys, who took home trophies this year for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package, Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals, are returning to the Twin Cities on July 3 to play the Roy Wilkins Auditorium with openers Cage the Elephant.

Though the venue has gotten plenty of grief for its less-than-ideal sound setup for rock shows, its been a go-to spot for some of the biggest touring indie acts of late -- the Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, and LCD Soundsystem all played there in the last year.

Chris Riemenschneider is already petitioning to have the gig moved to Harriet Island, given that it falls on Fourth of July weekend and there likely won't be a Taste of Minnesota this year, which would boost the show's capacity to about 10,000 people. But something tells me the cool, boomy acoustics of the Roy might fit the lo-fi garage rock of the Black Keys just fine.

Just saw them last summer at First Ave. Aesthetics aside, I really think this summer's show will just be in a larger concrete box. However, Harriet island could be cool too!!
