Poly Styrene: Oh Cancer Up Yours!
The world of punk rock lost a feminist icon yesterday with the passing of Poly Styrene, frontwoman for X-Ray Spex, best known for the song, "Oh Bondage Up Yours!"

Styrene, born Marianne Elliott-Said, died at 53 on Monday after receiving treatment for an advanced form of breast cancer.

"We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places," a representative posted on her Twitter account.

In honor of Styrene's passing, here is a chill-inducing live performance of the X-Ray Spex ripping through their most famous and liberating song:

And here is a cover by Free Kitten, a Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) side-project, which was my introduction to the song. You can even see the beautiful pink picture disc that made this rarity such a collector's item.
