Sound Town brings the Flaming Lips, New Pornographers, over a dozen locals to Somerset August 19-20

With the 10,000 Lakes Festival on hiatus and Taste of Minnesota out of commission, our festival calendar was looking pretty sparse -- that is until this morning, when 89.3 the Current invited new Somerset Amphitheater partner Matt Mithun on air to announce Sound Town, a new festival coming to Somerset, Wisconsin on August 19 and 20.

For a first stab at a festival, the lineup is nothing to sneeze at: Somerset is bringing in national headliners the Flaming Lips, the New Pornographers, and DeVotchKa alongside over a dozen bands from the Twin Ciites that range from Solid Gold to Pink Mink to White Iron Band. With the exception of Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick (!) the lineup is pretty indie rock-heavy, but it's a nice selection of bands for the outdoor space and should have no problem drawing in avid Current fans.

Previously known as Float-Rite Park, the Somerset Amphitheater changed management last fall and has added an extra 100 acres to its property, adding on-site camping accommodations and permanent bathrooms to the already-established outdoor concert space.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 20 at 9 a.m. and are rumored to be priced reasonably, with an option to include overnight camping.

Does anybody know about the VIP price?  We bought the tx and it said that covered hooch, food(during festival times), and camping.  Is that right?  Thats a value, no?

If $45 seems high to you, you havn't been to a major festival anytime in the last 5 years.  I am doing VIP and that is a complete steal @ 160.

$45 is incredible for this lineup. Flaming Lips will cost you $35-50 wherever you see them. Plus i think people are underestimating the "smaller" non-flaming lips bands. Ghostland Observatory are insanely awesome band if you haven't heard of them, and are even better live. When will you have the chance to see Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick, legendary Hip-Hop artists, share the same docket as Delta Spirit, Roma Di Luna, Solid Gold (who hopefull have worked on their live-performance) Devotchka and Heiruspecs (who were solid at Lyn-Lake).?

Awesome line-up, if they do end up putting any more on the list it will just make it an even better value for the rumored $45 charge. Real excited.

$45 for The Flaming Lips, JUST The Flaming Lips, is completely reasonable.

there will be another 7-8 acts added to the lineup.

sure it could be better (a few bigger National acts), but for $45 for the weekend i think it looks like a pretty good first attempt

Any more bands being added to this list? it's a good start, but far from a dream.

Ghostland Observatory is pretty much the worst "band" I've ever seen. Heiruspecs makes them look like a soulless, vapid bunch of teenagers starting an Abba cover band.

i meant that $45 is a lot for a lineup of bands that you can see for free 20-30 minutes away from the site of the festival.  i love the lips but i think $45 is too much unless its a soft bulletin show.

i would rather pay 15 dollars to see doug benson at acme that weekend.  cheaper, closer and someone i haven't seen since 4/20 last year.  oh yes, and i meant the month previous about the lips.

again just like you said, its a good first attempt, but my opinion is $45 is too much for that lineup.

I think is called 'Sound Town' and not 'Dream Festival.'

Given that you'd be paying $30 to see Flaming Lips, maybe $20 a piece for Devotchka and New Pornographers, all the rest seem like a bonus, especially when considering the cost of the ticket includes camping.

also consider that Rock The Garden charged the same price for FOUR bands over like 6 hours and sold out within 24 hours.

considering the Flaming Lips charged $45 for day of show tickets to their recent Roy Wilkins show, i think you're high.

go see all the hyped bands who will be forgotten in 5 years at Pitchfork

i like the list of acts but $45 seems a bit high.  most of the local bands will play for free throughout the twin cities all summer.  plus you can see the lips in either chicago or milwaukee 4 times the week before and at better festivals.

its a good first attempt though.  too bad we can't figure something out here in the twin cities.

book a festival yourself then

$45 for 2 nights is high?  You're high.

Bands don't play for free..........at least not the good ones, unless it's for charity.

so you're saying none of those local bands are anyone you'd pay? that's kinda how that reads
