Alan Lomax was the principal documentarian of of southern roots music, culminating in the release, fifty years ago, of Sounds of the South, a keystone in American musical history.

Last fall, an improbably good band played some selections from his defining collection and...wow.

Performing at the MusicNow festival in Cincinnatti, Ohio, Sharon Van Etten and Justin Vernon were backed by Megafaun and Fight The Big Bull for their reinterpretations of music that reaches right at your heartsleeves from over a hundred years past, with the beards and hats to match.

Watch below as they play the backbar-ready "Write Me A Few Lines" and the gospel lament "Trials, Troubles, Tribulations."
