Basilica Block Party boycotted over Church's gay marriage opposition

The block party gets sucked into the marriage debate.
We've got more than 16 months to go before Minnesotans vote on whether to make gay marriage unconstitutional. But the battle lines are already being drawn, and they're showing up in some surprising places.

Like this year's Basilica Block Party.

Reacting to the Catholic Archdiocese's strong stance against gay marriage, a large and growing Facebook campaign is pledging to boycott the event.

The campaign grew out of the blogging of Nicole Burg, a marriage equality activist who says it's time to push back against the Church's anti-gay-marriage lobbying.

"Please do not attend the Basilica Block Party this year," reads the campaign's statement. "Please do not contribute money to a Catholic Church fundraiser while they are spending millions of dollars to write discrimination into the MN constitution."

It's true that the Archdiocese has taken a leading role in lobbying to make gay marriage unconstitutional. Last year it bombarded local Catholics with mass-mailed DVDs calling for the constitutional ban.

And just last week, Archbishop John Nienstedt suggested that legalized gay marriage could lead to polygamy and marrying family members.

But it's not like your $70 ticket to the block party is going straight into the Church's anti-gay marriage war-chest. Proceeds are used the same way they have been since the festival was founded 16 years ago: Some of the money goes to structural repairs to the Basilica of St. Mary. The rest funds one of the Parish's main charitable programs, helping the poor and out-of-work afford clothing and bus-fare.

Burg thinks it's a bogus distinction: "If the Archdiocese wasn't spending all that money on DVDs (in support of the amendment), it could use the money to renovate the Basilica," she told MinnPost.

What do you think? Is boycotting the Basilica Block Party an appropriate response for gay-marriage supporters?

Pinto's questions..."What do you think? Is boycotting the Basilica Block Party an appropriate response for gay-marriage supporters?"

My question..."Is any organization that denies the female gender any sanctified roles in its rituals and at best presents a mythical virgin as the gender icon to be taken seriously when it spends millions sending out DVDs while at the same time closing parishes for want of funds?"

... and your writing implies Nicole started this boycott, she did not, clean up your writing Pinto.

And what would happen if an effective boycott of GBLT owned and friendly businesses was organized?  Besides political pressure to charge those responsible with hate crimes that is.  Those organizing this so-called boycott need to be cautious of the backsplash.......

According to the Basilica Block Party website, only 5% of the funds raised from the Block Party go to charity (St. Vincent de Paul Society). The other 95% goes to keep the Basilica in shape. The Basilica is, after all, the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese. In other words, Archbishop Nienstedt's second cathedral, the first being the Cathedral of St. Paul. Deep-pocketed conservative Catholics inside and outside the state will be contributing big bucks to see that the Marriage amendment passes. Why should the Basilica, the co-cathedral, ask non-Catholics to buy a Block Party ticket which supports its building maintenance program, when at the same time it supports the Archbishop's efforts to halt the progress of gay and lesbian couples who seek marriage equality? No one's asking the Catholic Church to change it's rules about same sex marriage. But people take issue with the Catholic Church attempting to prevent non-Catholic gays and lesbians from marrying.

Get over it. This is a fundraiser to help the less fortunate. If you boycott then you also, even if non-directly, boycott helping less fortunate people mentioned in the quote below."The rest funds one of the Parish's main charitable programs, helping the poor and out-of-work afford clothing and bus-fare."

This just puts gays lower and lower in every normal person's list of priorities. Normal decent people are wholly against homosexual uprisings. These are the same perverts who went through downtown in parades in cross dress. Every homosexual pervert was represented. Women dressing as men. Men dressing as women. Same sexers kissing. Transexual. Altogether a loathsome bunch.

Even if they got their pervert rights, they will never in a zillion years get any respect from the normal heterosexual community. This latest uprising puts them lower than excrement in a city park restroom that never gets cleaned.

So get normal, you homosexuals. Or go hide.

I was already planning to boycott it over the terrible lineup

I'd support the boycott if only because money is fungible. There are plenty of worthy charities to raise funds for that aren't bent on denying civil rights and enshrining discrimination in our secular founding documents for religious reasons. Let the church decide whether it is more in keeping with their mission to feed and clothe the poor or produce propaganda DVDs.

Are you related to Whoopie John Wilfart. Or are you just a stupid fart? Go hide the closet, limp wrist.

That was very well said! Indeed, this works both ways. I read where militant gays called sponsors, who "blew" them off. (Pun, heh) Gays should be rather cautious taking on the Catholic Church so militantly. They came across as the very insecure backbiting vicious people they are. My stance is that let same-sex people live together. But as far as the word "marriage" goes, it never will fit what the vast majority of heterosexuals do. And there a LOT more traditional heterosexual marrieds than gays. They represent a tiny minority. If gays think they are David fighting Goliath, they are sadly deluded. In this case, Goliath is quite capable of getting revenge, taking the slingshot and sticking it up David's butt. And I am well prepared to seek out who these militant gays are and lash their backs. Find out where they work and let their employers know who they are.

Finally, I do have some gay friends, who find what these boycotting gays are doing is abominable. I am informed that a great many homosexuals living with other homosexuals are quite happy to live in peace and don't want the "absurd idea of marriage," as some said. These gay people are very nice and decent, unlike the scum who are stupid enough to kill their reputations by taking on the Catholic Church, which is doing good. These militant gays should look in the mirror and ask what they are doing FOR society. The answer is nothing! They are spreading hate.

RCC's big bucks, their heavy voter turnout and Mexican mega-votes will trample pervert wrong rights at the polls and in general. TCs have heavy influx of Mexicans who are overwhelmingly Catholic. And they vote. Then there are mixed religions that are very much against pervert marriage. Those are the Asians, Arabs and Somalis, who don't take to homos. They like their milk homogenized. And their homos way outside. We gotcha pervs waaaaaay out-numbered and out-spent.

Now I must take off my hard hat and cute, form-fitting workman clothes and put on some cut-offs and stinky tennis shoes.

My  wife says I'm a "cross dresser." Every time I have to get dressed up for church and company, I get cross.

Joe, Only 5% of funds raised through the Block Party go to charity (check out the Basilica Block Party website).

Get over it. If you don't boycott, then you support--even if non-directly--funneling your money through bigoted middlemen who squander some of your donation on themselves, and on dividing our community, instead of giving it all to people in need.

You apparently didn't read, or didn't comprehend, §'s comment above. I give my money to charities that don't also support efforts that keep me a second-class citizen.

Tough to believe with 100% certainty that the money actually goes there though.  Seems like we've heard quite a few lies out of the Catholic Church.

Asians, Arabs, Somalis... Christians, Jews... Bigotry comes in all colors and types.  One thing they all share is idiocy.

Make that a no-class citizen. Go homo, homos. Even if you win the battle, you will lose the war.

I rolled on the floor laughing at your comment, Elvis. Why don't YOU use you real name, you faggot? HA!

You are as heterosexual as the dead senator Spear, who was a queer. Indeed, Spear rhymes with queer. HA! And so the fags have a shrine for him, as reported by the City Fagpaper.

This once-proud city put together by decent, hard-working Norwegians, Swedes, Fins and Germans has been invaded by home-grown fags, whose families didn't beat them enough when they had temper tantrums.

Ok by me, I'm retiring to South Dakota, where we don't put up with fags like you and your pervs.

Typical narcissistic reply from a homosexual since that's one of their characteristics. Sorry fruitcake, the world is quite against you. Same-sex perversion is not God's Way, nor the way of basic humanity. Homosexuals are freaks of nature. Sorry RP, your unstable ways will RIP, an uneasy requiescat in pace at that. So you are fighting against the windmills of the world. Get out of the way, or you'll get clobbered.

Ya made me laugh! :) God's way is the right way. Despite various weird sexual urges, God will help homosexuals. Keep your wayward sexual urges in check. Exercise. Pray.

The phrase is "Pray. Don't prey." Ha. Kind of catchy. Well, I gotta got to work now at the paper company. Just happened to see this bad news about spoiled brat weirdos trying to put down the Holy Roman Catholic Church.

Jesus is the way of the world. He offers the Good Life and the Good News.

ROFL! Strange that we never hear of a homosexual being a closeted heterosexual. Sounds like they want it both ways. As for me, I can't stand the loud fricking so-called music at the big block party. But it does go for good causes. Basilica freely gives food and clothing away for any person who knocks at their side door. When I didn't have anything, I ate some Basilica ham and cheese sandwiches with an apple. Now that I'm on my feet again, I'm really pro-Basilica. Gays or whatever they call themselves are greedy spoiled brats. They should be horsewhipped and sent to Devils Lake North Dakota.
