Tom Petty up in arms over Michele Bachmann's use of 'American Girl'

Tom Petty is reportedly upset following yesterday's presidential candidacy announcement by Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who closed out her nationally televised speech by playing Petty's "American Girl."

The initial report came from NBC's Matt Ortega via Twitter: "@TomPetty unhappy with Michele Bachmann's use of 'American Girl' and in process of issuing [a cease and desist] letter." Ortega's NBC colleague Kelly O'Donnell confirmed that the rock star's management will be requesting that Bachmann back away from the Petty at future events.

This isn't the first time a politician has gotten in trouble for using a band's song without permission; Petty himself fought George W. Bush during the 2000 election season when he used his song "I Won't Back Down" without consent, and Heart's Ann Wilson went after Sarah Palin when the 2008 McCain campaign used "Barracuda" to promote their vice-presidential candidate.

As Fox News points out, Hillary Clinton used "American Girl" throughout her 2008 campaign without any complaints from Petty. Don't they know rock 'n' roll music has a strong liberal bias?
