Brother Ali is playing two separate community-oriented events this week. In addition to this Saturday's
Day of Dignity, an outreach event that will provide North Minneapolis residents with free food and supplies and caps off with a free concert by Ali and Freeway, he will perform tonight at the Varsity Theater along with Slug and several other Twin Cities hip-hop artists at a benefit for the fallen "cultural ambassador" Brother Mahdi.
Charles Augustus Bryant "Mahdi," also known as DJ Nex, passed away on August 26 after a battle with stomach cancer. In addition to being active in the hip-hop community, he was also the co-founder of Nation Of Gods and Earths Minnesota and several other community foundations. Proceeds from tonight's event will go to Mahdi's four children.
Here's the full lineup for the benefit. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the event is 18+ and $11.50.
The Guardians Of Balance (St Paul Slim & Mastermind)
