It was a sure sign of the end of summer last week when Malamanya, everyone's favorite local Cuban son band, ended their Tuesday night residency at the Driftwood Char Bar in Minneapolis. But what was extra special and encouraging about the event was the band surprised the swelling crowd with a brand new CD of their music, both to tide folks over and to no doubt provide the something sweet for folks to jam on their own home hi-fi systems in the coming cold months.

The band also released this commemorative video of sorts of Driftwood highlights, as well as making an appearance on KFAI's "Live in Studio 5":

Coming up, Malamanya will be graduating to bigger rooms with a pair of gigs next weekend; they have a headlining date at the Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, September 16, as well as a special opening slot for new duo Villa Rosa, which features Muja Messiah and Maria Isa, the following night at the First Avenue Mainroom. That evening promises to be a dizzying display and cultural mix of some of the Twin Cities' finest including Carnage, Mayda, Mike the Martyr, Dan Speak, DJ Simon Birch, and MaLLy.

One would reccomend investing in a new pair of dance shows before that weekend arrives.

Malamanya plays the Cedar Cultural Center, Friday September 16. Doors at 7pm. $8 in advance, $10 at the door. All Ages welcome!

Thank you for sharing this!  It's refreshing to see some new faces on these blogs rather than regurgitating information about the bands of the moment which tends to happen from time to time.  I've seen this group perform, and they are definitely worth seeing live.  The music is a celebratory experience, and all of the musicians in the group are gifted at their respective instruments.  I'm definitely gonna go to one of these shows you mentioned.  Thanks again for the tip!
