The three musicians of Megafaun hardly need an introduction around these parts. In addition to being familiar faces in the live formation of Gayngs, brothers Phil and Brad Cook and Joe Westerlund have a long history with fellow Eau Claire native Justin Vernon, having formed Megafaun immediately following the dissolution of the quartet's touring band, DeYarmond Edison.

In this week's City Pages, Rob van Alstyne takes a closer look at the origins of Megafaun and how forming under somewhat dramatic circumstances has helped the band to stay fresh over the past five years. They play the Cedar Cultural Center this Friday night. Read van Alstyne's analysis and interview with Brad Cook here.

Also in today's print edition: Our critics' picks section, which runs down all the best shows to see in town this week, plus Ray Cummings' weekly column, 5ingles.
