Metallica and Lou Reed release first track from Lulu

Ever since the pair announced their upcoming concept record, Lulu -- which they've been working on since first meeting up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary in '09 -- fans have welcomed the news with head scratches and shoulder shrugs, trying to imagine the end result or purpose of the real life mash-up.

Co-produced with Hal Wilner, who's somewhat of a specialist of high concept tribute records, Lulu will be 10 tracks based on the plays of early 20th century German expressionist Frank Wedekind, "Earth Spirit" and "Pandora's Box" -- evidently a consistent read and passion for Reed, who approached Metallica about providing the musical back drop for his poetic interpretation.

The ambitious project will likely breathe new life into both careers and serve as a welcome addition to their bodies of work as some of their music has been hit or miss in recent years.

After unveiling the tracklist and somewhat creepy artwork, which has been banned in the London Underground transit system this week, they are giving another peak into the record with "The View":

The track is unmistakably Metallica, with chunky guitars and a charging backbeat. Reed's prose over the top will likely either keep fans with bated breath for Lulu's Halloween release or continue to confound listeners. Either way, it's always cool to see veteran acts try something new.
