People were in full-on party mode this weekend, as many clubs chose to have their Halloween festivities on a non-school-night in advance of the holiday. There are still plenty of chances to go out and celebrate tonight -- First Avenue will be hosting their annual Halloween bash, and Solid Gold are playing their first headlining gig in a while at the Varsity Theater.

To get you in the mood for tonight's Halloween parties, we picked out some of the most convincing musical costumes at last weekend's Too Much Love, from Bowie to Sid and Nancy to Janelle Monae.

Liminal Phase release a new album at Bryant Lake Bowl

Liminal Phase2.jpg
Look up the term liminal phase on Wikipedia and you will be met with the meaning: The transition (liminal) phase is the period between states, during which one has left one place or state but hasn't yet entered or joined the next.

Minneapolis band Liminal Phase's music shares many of the same qualities as its wiki definition. "As a musician, one of the cool things I would say about this project is surrender," says bandleader Adam Levy. "A lot of times in bands there is a sense of a leader and someone who is calling the shots. In this band, for me, it's about saying, 'Look at all these other ideas. Where is that going to make you go?' and allowing this band to create a sort of living animal every time we play a song."

Fitzgerald Theater, St. Paul

Dessa's CD-release party at the Fitzgerald Theater on Friday night was about as far from a rap show as you could get. Backed by an excellent chamber group and back-up singers, and with her Doomtree pals tucked neatly into one of the balconies overlooking the stage, Dessa took the opportunity to cast aside all of her other titles -- writer, poet, teacher, rapper -- to to focus squarely on her expanding talents as soulful singer and engaging, downright hilarious storyteller.

Dance nights are big on Thanksgiving Eve. Everyone has the next day off, and there's probably more than a few people who anticipate a massive caloric freefall and want to get their bodies moving before the tryptophan coma. This year, there's a fantastic option for us all: One of the city's finest disc jockeys -- both in clubs and on the radiowaves -- is teaming up with this here paper for a big dance-a-thon. Jake Rudh and City Pages, along with The Current, are proud to announce 'Seconds' at the Varsity.

We touched base with Jake late last week about what makes him excited for the event. It's hard to believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so mark your calendars...

Method Man and Curren$y at First Avenue, 10/28/11

This Halloween we found out that Method Man is a monster. His intensity on Friday night at First Avenue for the local leg of the Smoker's Club Tour entirely made up for numerous disappointments -- including the cancellation of lineup standout Big KRIT.  As the show's top act, Method Man showed the audience (and the other rappers in the house) why he's been at the forefront of the rap game for decades as he put on a clinic in stage presence, lyrical skill, and crowd control. This came in stark contrast to a blunted opening set by New Orleans' Curren$y, who was injured and sat down most of the performance.

6 zombie songs to get you fired up for Halloween

The bloody and drunken Zombie Pub Crawl may be over (RIP), but we all know zombies never die. So, what better way to get pumped up for Halloween weekend than by listening to a bunch of zombie songs?

The historical relationship between zombies and Halloween is a typical clusterfuck of American mashup culture, where Haitian voodoo tradition plus European folklore equals a Wal-Mart Halloween section and a zombie movie starring Jesse Eisenberg. But despite the recent onslaught of zombie thrillers, comedies (zom coms?) and books, The Culture Machine has been peddling zombie culture since at least 1932, when Hollywood released its first full-length zombie film--which was titled White Zombie and starred Béla Lugosi (recognize either of those names?).

Here are 6 awesome zombie songs to listen to while you put on your costume and makeup this weekend:

St. Vincent at the Walker Art Center earlier this month
It's about lunchtime, right? Well, best go get your lunch outta the fridge and come back to your desk, because you're going to want to devote 15 uninterrupted minutes to this video. For those unfamiliar with the 4AD Session series, it's one of the finest high-quality performance video series on the web right now, and gives an up-close view (closer than a front-seat view... think crouching at the performer's feet in awe) of some of the most talented indie artists performing today.
