It seems hard to believe that it has been nearly three and a half years since Coldplay's last album made Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People possibly more iconic than it already was or provided that a church bell can indeed find a place on a rock album.

But after a few Grammy wins and legal disputes, Coldplay wanted to start with a clean slate. And it appears the four British lads created it with their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto

The first thing to understand before you listen to Mylo Xyloto is that when you're as big a band as Coldplay, you can do anything you want. Which one would find out quickly includes making up words, like Mylo Xyloto, and dressing up in elephant costumes and riding unicycles through South Africa and riding the London Underground.

Sounds intriguing, right?

If that's not enough, Mylo Xyloto -- although even the band themselves have yet to decide definite meaning on -- is a concept album centering on a love story. Hip-hop beats and pop synths intermingle with the familiar sounds of Jonny Buckland's guitars on songs like "Princess of China" (featuring Rihanna), "Paradise," or the summer hit, "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall." Mylo Xyloto hits the stores today.

For more on the new album, Billboard has a track-by-track review, and Rolling Stone has already awarded it 3.5 stars.
