Shuga Records has had somewhat of a tenuous run in Minnesota. With a heavy emphasis on developing their
online store, they seemed to struggle to connect with the community on the same grassroots level as longtime local staples like Treehouse Records or Roadrunner.
So while the loss of an area record store never comes without a sense of sadness, we weren't
too surprised to hear that Shuga will be closing up its Northeast shop this weekend so that its owners can pack up and move back to Chicago, the store's original home.
"We understand that's pretty sudden, and apologize for anyone who is inconvenienced by this. If you have records to sell, or purchases to pick up, we will still be here working in back, so just give us a call at (612) 455-6285 to schedule an appointment," the store posted in its
announcement on Tumblr.
Shuga's greatest contribution to the community at large was their series of outdoor concerts and festivals, including two installments of the Art-A-Whirl-timed HoolieFest, the Northeast Folk Festival, the Minneapolis Electronic Music Festival, and this year's Audio Perm Block Party, and they say they hope to plan similar events in Chicago next year.
As a final farewell, Shuga says they plan to offer 35-50% discounts to Twin Cities residents who order from them by phone. They will also be offering a 35-50% discount to Chicago residents who pick up their orders in person (something that the store says they offered while they were in Minneapolis as well). They will also open their storefront every first and third Saturday starting in January to help liquidate some of their stock before the move.
