Though he's been relatively quiet on the music front since dropping his solo debut Self Destruction in 2005, Minneapolis rap legend I Self Devine is back in a big way with the first of four free mixtapes in anticipation of his sophomore album, The Sounds of Low Class America, due in May.
LA State of Mind, the first mixtape in what's being called "The Culture Series", was made available almost as quickly as the announcement that it was coming, and it focuses on the rapper's West Coast origins and upbringing. The video for the mixtape's lead track "Sweat Equity" features the Rhymesayers OG spitting over a paranoiac funk beat as his lyrics are brought to life with comic book and graffiti-inspired illustrations.
This is only the beginning, as new mixtapes are set to arrive the first Thursday of every month, with a show at 7th Street Entry planned for each release. This month's party falls on the 22nd and will feature performances from Brother Ali, Muja Messiah, Alicia Steele and the Endeavors, along with DJs Kool Akiem, King Otto and Just 9. Grab LA State of Mind here, or stream below.
