Lindsay Lohan disses Minnesota hip-hop radio on Saturday Night Live?

Lindsay_Lohan_SNL.jpg
Lindsay Lohan as intern Illiterate Lisa.
Lindsay Lohan dons a conrnrow wig in a Saturday Night Live skit about a fictional B108 hip-hop radio station based in Shakopee, Minnesota. Alhough it's a concept delivered with plenty of amusing local color -- anyone who remembers waiting expectantly in their youth for school closings to be announced after a big snowfall can relate -- the real joke is on local radio listeners.

Since the 2010 format shift of B96, there isn't a rap format station to be found on the dial throughout our fair "flyover" metro area.

Perhaps the skit's writers literally said "Where's a city that has no hip-hop station?" And the rest is what we have here. Not to say that B108's towel-waving, fleece-repping, slang-bangin' morning jocks Richard and the Buffalo are the type of characters we'll miss at 5 a.m. or any other time. (It'll be interesting to see how B96 alums Tone E Fly, Anjali, and Peter Parker feel about this type of portrayal.)

Although this is couched mostly in a bit lampooning the ridiculousness of a bunch of very Caucasian people trying to be "street" in a studio bedecked with Timberwolves, Twins, and Vikings memorabilia, there's an awareness of what challenges our listening area faces. When it comes time to do "Wake Up and Win," absolutely no one calls in to try and win a prize. "Only the sound of wind!" one of our annoying jocks reports. And at that point, they say $58,000 has accumulated in the B108 "schwag closet" -- or the equivalent of "three years salary" for these hopeless creatures. Frowny face.

On the bright side, you will enjoy the strait-laced school closings read by an UGGs-wearing news reader Karen (Vanessa Bayer): "My Isuzu slid across four lanes before I was able to just drift behind a dairy truck. I almost died."

It might not be the greatest portray of MN but at least we are relevant enough to talk about!  Maybe someone will feel bad and start a R&B and hip-hop station here because we are defiantly lacking one!

This is what radio stations sound like in the majority of markets.  Peer crap.

BTW, did anyone else notice the response from the crowd? There were a handful of people who actually laughed and I'm assuming they were from either Minnesota or some other Midwestern state. Poor SNL.

As a fan, friend, and supporter of local Hip Hop for many years, I have to say that this shit made me laugh. Nice Work SNL. I hope you all realize that they weren't making fun of Hip Hop.

Hip-hop is a culture. The music is called Rap.

Christ Reed, are you trying to work for TMZ or something? Not every headline needs to be as hyperbolic as possible. I don't see a diss here at all, certainly not from Lohan. They were just making fun of morning radio shows and threw in a shakopee reference as an inside joke for the people who know about Soundset. Would you have put up a post like this about JT and Bon Iver if Justin hadn't made clear at the end of the show that he was a fan?

I have no idea why the arts/creative types here in 'flyover land' continue to fawn over the drek that passes for SNL the past 20 years........

One of SNL's writers, Erik Kenward, is from Minnesota and went to the Arts High School in Golden Valley. Perhaps he was the one who suggested Shakopee.

That's the best SNL skit featuring a Minnesota town since Fly High Duluth.

Calm Down

They're just making jokes about the weather, primarily.  Also making fun of shitty morning DJs.  I'm sure that no one writing for SNL has even heard of Atmosphere.  Save your breath, for warming your hands.

I don't understand this. Why is there no mention of KMOJ? Thats the best hip hop station we have in Minneapolis and it features local artists all the time.

heythereguy

eh, i thought the joke was about the over the top attitude of morning radio in general, juxtaposed with the fact its too early and cold for people to be acting that way. there wasn't any other local digs other than the time and temperature.

I think Hip Hop suck anywhere! Old time Hip Hop is awesome! Today's artist have lost what hip hop really was. Minnesota has some of the best talent around! I don't think I need to drop names. We have artists here that have will hold Mega Star status for generations to come.

Nobody watches SNL anymore. I wouldn't worry about it. Twin Cities hip-hop is pretty terrible though.

@reedfischer do you think it was just coincidence that the station happened to be in Shakopee where the Soundset festival is held every year.. I feel like whoever pitched this skit must have seen peter parker interview people at the Soundset festival.

Rather sad you don't bother to mention that there's a lot of locally grown hiphop artists in MSP who you can hear regularly on local radio. Maybe we don't need a rap format station because rap gets played everywhere anyway.

Or it might be that most people under the age of 50 don't bother listening to an obsolete form of media when they can listen to anything they want on the internet.

Yeah, Cbats, I'm with you.  I'm actually watching that episode right now, and you may as well say, "Andy Samberg slams Buddhists on national TV" because of the "Rude Buddha" skit that came on a few minutes after the B-108 skit.  Totally and completely misleading, and I can't help but feel like it was worded the way it was to capitalize on the whole "Jordan Gatesmith disses Minnesota music" thing.

Your name is Proudtobefrommn and you don't know who Atmosphere are? They are a fantastic Twin Cities based hip hop group that are relatively well known across the country. Look them up!

That's what makes this skit so lame.  Who the fuck listens to whacky morning radio anymore anyway?   This skit would have been really "fresh" and "chill" in 1994.   Congrats SNL on being nearly a decade behind.   What's next?   Jokes about how the internet is for nerds?    Fresh and chill dudes!

David Jr.
David Jr.

And oddly enough, the other "urban" station is...1530 in Shakopee. It's mostly satellite, but actually pretty fun.

KMOJ could use an upgrade in audio quality (it has sounded like an internet stream circa 2001 for awhile now), which could give it a massive boost.

SNL is painfully unfunny when they think that "Ha!! White people acting like they're not from the suburbs, amirite??" is humor.

Minnesota hip hop is some of the best hip hop you will ever hear.  There is actually a message behind it unlike mainstream hip hop.  Some of the hardest working and most humble artists come from Minneapolis.  Minneapolis has one of the most poppin' hip hop scenes out of any city I've been to.  You should be proud to be from a city with such a growing scene.

What about the cities hip hop is "terrible"? You have 1 group that is literally the father of independent hip hop of this era, Atmosphere.  You have a label that is more or less respected by everyone in the immediate genre, and then some. Brother Ali is one of the most respected people out right now, Grieves and Budo are some of the fastest growing, a sadly...Minneapolis lost one of the greatest to ever step foot on a battle stage, Eyedea.

MPLS hip hop is some of the best you can find.

Sadly I have to agree with your assessment of SNL right now. SNL seems so be quite cyclical to me when it comes to quality and right now we are stuck in a period of total suckage. It helps to DVR the show and then you can skip bad skits and lame musical acts, which is the vast majority of what they are putting out there. The last great episode of SNL was last year's season finale with Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga as the musical act, Jimmy Fallon appeared in the Barry Gibb Talk Show skit. Best episode of the last ten years and I still have it saved on my TiVo.

Are you crazy?!?! Real Hip-Hop is keeping it real with yourself and not mimicing the "cool". If you ever heard real Twin Cities Hip-Hop you'd notice just exactly how real this Hip-Hop is.

You'redumb

Clearly you're not aware of the fact that Minneapolis is home to one of the highest grossing independent hip hop labels. Rhymesayers pretty impressive considering there is no hip hop station here anymore. Obviously you know nothing about hip hop. Ignorance at its finest!

You thinkit sucks in Minneapolis? Try moving to Sioux Falls like me, country, pop, more country and christian radio. That's all that's here, makes Minneapolis look spectacular.

And Rhymsayers sucks compared to Doomtree which is probably the best independent hip hop label in the country and they are also local.  Yeah, Minneapolis hip hop sucks.  Just...wow.
