Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles drop "Just a Kid" video

Childhood and growing up have always been the central themes in Lucy Michelle's music. There's a deep desire to hold onto youth that courses through her lyrics, and seeps through the music, right down to the loose, freewheeling way that she and her Velvet Lapelles put their songs together. Even as Michelle's songwriting, and the group's playing, has matured over the years, that youthful preoccupation colors what they do.

Michelle's latest single, "Just a Kid," is no exception to this rule, and it's already been getting radio play for a while. Now, there's a brand-spanking-new music video to go with it.  Check it out below the break.
The video, directed by Picture Machine Productions' Daniel Cummings, makes a quick sweep through a few different spots in Minneapolis, starting off in a recording studio and ending in an apartment room. Along the way, we follow Michelle through some shots of downtown and what looks like the Orpheum Theatre.

"Just a Kid" is one of the best songs Michelle has written, and the video does a great job of playing off its sense of impermanence: everything around her, including her own bandmates, seem like they could disappear at any minute, just like the scrambled image on the TV screen. Coincidentally, the video also helps underscore some of the changes that have happened with the Velvet Lapelles of late, as you'll notice Liz Draper (also of the Cactus Blossoms) debuting on upright bass, while Jesse Schuster stands in on guitar.

Of course, there's a twist, too: is it actually the singer's rabbit who's the object of her affection? We'll let you decide.

Michelle and Co. will be releasing a new album, their fourth, titled Heat, on April 20th at First Avenue. The show will also include Corey Chisel and the Wandering Sons, Communist Daughter, and DJ sets by Solid Gold.

Hey there, just so you know. Dan Cummings is the head of Picture Machine Productions, not a part of MPLS.TV. Though the two companies have worked together on a number of occasions, Picture Machine did the video, not MPLS.TV.

Thank you.
