MayDay Hip-Hop & Art Festival lineup launches outdoor music season

Used to being cooped up during the winter months, the Twin Cities has been known to come alive in a big way when the summer rolls around. There's hardly a better time to get out and celebrate, and First Nations Recovery Center is hosting an outdoor MayDay Hip-Hop & Art Festival to ring in the season.

This all-ages event will showcase a number of local hip-hop artists onstage to help support the First Nations Center, an outpatient recovery program designed for and by Native people. The Center has a real stake in the community it represents, and aims to end addiction by presenting a less self-absorbing alternative of outreach and giving back.

From that same philosophy comes this festival, a great way to build relationships, support a worthwhile cause, and see some killer music all at the same time. Maria Isa has been making the rounds locally with collaborator Muja Messiah as Villa Rosa, but Sunday's headlining solo set will spotlight her multiple individual talents as a singer, rapper, and everything in-between. The Anchormen will be present representing Long Doe Records, fresh off an impressive string of big-ticket shows including opening for Ghostface Killah, and their collective energy is a force to be reckoned with. Rez Rap Records will be down from Red Lake to represent for the Native hip-hop scene. Having just dropped "Martyr Music" recently, Knox is sure to bring a strong set, while Haphduzn, Rob-1, and Point of Contact will round out the bill for a solid day chock full of great local rap.

Hungry attendees can enjoy the barbeque and Indian tacos for sale at the show, and there will be plenty of local artwork to take in between sets. The whole thing starts at 3 pm, and provides a great excuse to spend the day outdoors. Donate what you can and help support MayDay marks the beginning of the outdoor music season, and this is a fantastic place to ring in the good times.
