Record Store Day 2012: Twin Cities in-store events roundup

RSD Poster.jpg
In addition to the stellar, limited-edition vinyl that is released exclusively for Record Store Day, record shops throughout the Twin Cities and beyond have plenty of exciting in-store music events and specials planned to add to Saturday's RSD festivities.

Here's just a sampling of the outstanding events that are happening around town in coordination with every music fan's favorite day of the year, Record Store Day.

We've already mentioned American Buffalo, the exclusive Noiseland Industries record that comes free with qualifying purchases at local record stores, which features plenty of talented local artists (Trampled By Turtles, Poliça, The 4onthefloor, etc...). You can pick up your copy at participating stores while supplies last.

We've also previously shared info about the full day of music and fun that Hymie's Vintage has in store. Though the good folks at Hymie's have revealed the secret special guest that they have added to their free day of music, recent Domino Records signees, Night Moves.

The local group will surely add to the great list of bands already assembled, but if you needed any more motivation to drop into Hymie's on Saturday, they will also be giving away free copies of Hymie's Record Store Day 2012 sampler CD, which features tracks from all fourteen bands who are performing throughout the day, including three exclusive tracks that have never been released. They will also be distributing the first ever edition of the Hymie's Times, a four-page newspaper letting everyone know about the fun, music-filled day they have planned.

The Electric Fetus consistently goes all out for Record Store Day, and this year is clearly no exception. In addition to having the largest stock of the exclusive RSD releases, as well as Radio K DJ's providing a smooth soundtrack to the morning rush at the Minneapolis location, the Fetus will also feature plenty of great in-store live music performances highlighted by an afternoon set by the hotly tipped local band Howler, as well as free refreshments and discounted food options throughout the day.

Here's a complete listing of the excellent (free!) music lineup (and set times) at the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis on Saturday:

Secret Stash Records, 10 a.m.
Heartbeats, 11 a.m.
Erik Koskinen, 12 p.m.
Malamanya, 1 p.m.
Nightinghales, 2 p.m.
Howler, 3 p.m.
Eric Hutchinson, 4 p.m.

Fifth Element will also be featuring some great performances in their store, in addition to a special Rhymesayers Record Store Day release featuring an unreleased Atmosphere track, as well as Soundset ticket giveaways, and other special events and deals throughout the day. Performances will include a Lavabangers set by Lazerbeak and Plain Ole Bill, Best Hip Hop Artist MaLLy, Auddio Draggon, Jimmy 2 Times, DJ Fundo, and Last Word.

Our recent Best Of winners for Best Place To Buy Vinyl, Yeti Records also has a fantastic local music lineup which will be performing in their basement, and is sure to provide a raucous accompaniment to your search through their glorious stacks of LPs. Music starts at 1 p.m, with free in-store/basement performances by Seated Heat, Magic Castles, Marijuana Deathsquads, Leisure Birds, Mother of Fire, Food Pyramid, and Blind Shake.

The always rocking Extreme Noise will be featuring free refreshments throughout the day, as well as blistering live performances by Condominium and Chicago's Daylight Robery. Eclipse Records will surely put St. Paul into the Record Store Day spirit with hourly DJ sets from a few local luminaries in the Twin Cities music community, as well as having their share of exclusive RSD releases. And no matter what is happening at Treehouse Records on Saturday, music lovers should certainly make a special stop into one of Minneapolis' best independent record stores simply because it's a truly great place to browse for records.

And that is just a small sampling of what's happening in a few record shops around the Twin Cities during Record Store Day. Consult the full RSD list of participating record stores to see if a shop near you is joining in the fun. Happy record shopping, everyone, and Happy Record Store Day!

I love old vinyls, its the way music was meant to be played. Sit and relax or rock out to the classics. Got a great deal on a new but old looking record player last week. If your in the market for a new player, check out www.memoriesawakened.com
