Cedar Cultural Center named best world music venue

Anyone who has ever seen a show within the cozy confines of the Cedar Cultural Center knows that the West Bank music venue is one of the best rooms in town. And now, for the fourth year in a row, the club will bring the music outside to their patio with the Cedar Outdoors series, a string of absolutely free live performances from an eclectic mix of talented artists. In addition to the music (and food and drink specials), this year will also feature an Invisible Arts Workshop before each performance, a partnership with the Somali non-profit, Ka Joog, that will highlight poetry, storytelling, and various creative activities for the public to partake in.

On Thursday, June 21, Duluth blues virtuoso Charlie Parr will make another trek to the Cedar's patio for what is sure to be a highly enjoyable (but assuredly packed) performance. On June 28, the talented Californian banjo player Evie Ladin brings her highly evocative songs to the West Bank, while July 5 features the folk-pop stylings of North Carolina acoustic duo Mandolin Orange.

On July 19, the worldly music and rhythms of the Axis Mundi World Trio will provide the musical entertainment, while local hip-hop/spoken word artist Guante will bring his expressive, socially conscious material to the Cedar on July 26. And the inventive Twin Cities experimental quartet Wizards Are Real will make their only live performance of the summer on August 2.

Doors for each of these free performances are at 5 p.m., with the Invisible Arts Workshop starting at 5:30, and music beginning at 7 p.m. Fans are strongly recommended to show up early to assure admittance, as space is limited.
