Best New Band 2012: Night Moves

Local trio Night Moves are finally ready for their close up. After creating a buzz in the Twin Cities over the last few years with their emergent live shows and their free, digital-only debut, the burgeoning psych-pop group finally broke big when they signed with the acclaimed UK record label Domino in December.

The band have spent the better part of this year in Los Angeles along with distinguished producer Thom Monahan polishing up and straightening out their album, getting it ready for a worldwide release. And now, at long last, the official, physical debut album from Night Moves, still entitled Colored Emotions (as was the digital version), is set to be released via Domino Records on October 9.

The first single from the record is a reworked version of the soaring live staple, "Headlights," which was recently released as a 7-inch (the band's first tangible release, which they were quite thrilled about). Singer/guitarist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema have certainly taken their time perfecting the overall sound of the new album, but if the lead single is any indication, the wait will certainly be worth it.

The group are going to celebrate finishing their record with some high-profile live shows over the next month, beginning with a performance at the 80/35 Festival in Des Moines on July 7, an outdoor show at the Terrace in Madison with Wild Nothing on July 13, and an opening slot for Father John Misty at Schubas in Chicago the following night.

They return home to play First Avenue on July 21, along with Jeremy Messersmith and Greycoats, and are performing a free outdoor show as part of the Loring Music and Movies series on July 30 before a showing of the Hitchcock classic, Spellbound, as well as the Square Lake Film & Music Festival in Stillwater on August 11.

Their new, updated songs should feature prominently in all of these performances, and their longtime fans will get an early chance to hear what direction the band have taken their sound in. And with the release date of their long-awaited debut looming on the horizon, Night Moves will only get busier as October 9 draws closer.
