Over the years, it has become quite obvious that Minneapolis has a lot of love for both Spoon and Handsome Furs. Both bands (as well as Dan Boeckner's former group, Wolf Parade) have played some memorable sets in the city, with Spoon delivering an exhilarating two-night stand at First Avenue in 2010, in addition to their blistering Basilica Block Party performance a few months later. While Handsome Furs Triple Rock set last year was one of the definite shows of the summer.

Now, with Spoon taking a bit of an extended break between albums, and both Handsome Furs and Wolf Parade officially calling it quits, Spoon frontman Britt Daniel has joined forces with Handsome Furs/Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and Sam Brown from New Bomb Turks to form a supergroup of sorts, Divine Fits, who are coming out of the gates by giving some love back to Minneapolis in return for our years of support.

When talking about their new record, the band mention that Minneapolis played a role in the thematic nature and topical structure of their new songs.

"A Thing Called Divine Fits was made with much excitement and energy from March through May (minus a few weeks off for research) in a backyard studio in Los Angeles. What else can we tell you...We co-produced it with Nick Launay. It's about 42-and-a-half minutes long. Alex Fischel plays keyboards like a madman all over it. (Roughly) half the tracks are lead-sung by Dan and half by Britt. Over the course of its 11 songs it covers such topics as the death of true love, hitchhiking, cocoa butter, emotional distance, what happens when the curtain drops, and Minneapolis, MN. We think it's truly pretty great."

In addition to that warm (and surprising) local mention, the group also namechecks Minneapolis in the second song that has been shared from the new record, "Would That Not Be Nice." It features Daniel singing the wistful line, "I wish that I was in Minneapolis, like Barbara Eden (?)" over an infectious drumbeat and an insistent guitar riff. If the rest of the record reaches these type of heights, music fans everywhere are in for a real treat, whether they are in Minneapolis or not.

It's a rousing, spirited track (and a definite step forward from the somewhat plodding Boeckner-sung lead single, "My Love Is Real,"), and all but assures that the new band will certainly schedule a Minneapolis date if/when they decide to tour, if only so that Daniel can experience the thrill of singing that line along with Minneapolis' devoted music fans.

You can stream and download "My Love Is Real" here, and pre-order the limited-edition 7-inch single (which features a cover of Camper Van Beethoven's "I Was Born In A Laudromat" as a B-side) at the Merge shop.

Here is the full track listing and cover art for A Thing Called Divine Fits, which again is due out on August 28.
