In the latest programming venture engineered by 89.3 the Currrent, St. Paul's Fitzgerald Theater welcomes Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst this fall.

Hosted by DJ Mary Lucia, the night is expected to boast songs spanning Oberst's entire catalogue. Along with a sold-out 400 Bar visit on August 9 from his reunited punkier outfit, Desaparecidos, there's an abundance of the Monster of Folk hitting the Twin Cities in the coming months.

Last year's The People's Key proved to be one of the strongest Bright Eyes releases to date. It's got a bit of a science fiction feel in addition to the usual heartstring-plucking and Americana-tinged songwriting.

"It's about the present moment and looking forward and looking back," he told me. "I think there's some nostalgia in the record, but also excitement/terror of the future. That's a pretty common feeling for everyone living at this moment."

The Current Sessions at the Fitz is a new musical series hosted at the downtown St. Paul theater -- only steps away from the MPR studios. Tickets for Oberst, the first guest in the series, go on sale Wednesday.

Conor Oberst. 8 p.m., Thursday, September 20 at Fitzgerald Theater. MPR members can purchase tickets Wednesday, July 11, at noon. Public sales begin Friday, July 13 at noon. Tickets are $39-$46 for MPR members.
